What do I want to become when I grow up? Is there something else that will buy me a house and give me happiness at the same time? When teenagers ask themselves these questions, getting an answer is tough; how do we really know what we want to become if we don’t know what’s out there? What if we think we know what we want to do, but then realize we aren’t made for it? Also, this can’t possibly be a decision that can be made in a day. The Orchid School understands that this is a process that the students have to undergo to finally make a decision… that it’s important to help students in their journey to eventually discover what they are made for.
Towards this, The Orchid School, as every year, will conduct a two-day event on 4th and 5th of November 2015 for its students of Class X and XI. The camp that aims at helping students explore and discover different career options and professions, some even that they previously may not have even known existed. Instead of following a ‘cookie-cutter’ system, this allows them to broaden their horizons and look beyond the preconceived ideas of what they should or should not become, formed by their families or themselves.
Special Features of the Camp
Parent Involvement
Parents are invited to attend the camp with their children on both days. Discussions about careers cannot happen in a vaccuum and since these are dialogues that will extend to the home, it is important to have the parents be part of the same space.
Online Assessment
Students took an online assessment where their replies to certain questions helped determine what their natural inclination was towards eventually suggesting some career options that might be most suitable to their personality profile and interests.
The Career Camp
Shadab Siddiqui, IIM graduate and founder of ‘One Step Up Education Service Pvt. Ltd. ’, a career counseling organization, will be present, taking our students through two days of videos and documentaries that give glimpses of various career options, group discussions, personal interviews, the art of writing attractive resumes and hands-on activities over the two days.
Since these are discussions about career choices, what would be more pertinent than getting the perspective of working and established professionals themselves? This will come alive in a panel discussion where professionals from a variety of different fields will speak to students about exactly how it is to be what they are.
Students as Leaders
Another unique aspect of this camp lies in its very preparation. The Career Camp will also provide students with the opportunity to work on varied skills and understand the importance of commitment and hard work. With adults and teachers taking a back seat and providing support, students will get to roll their sleeves up and understand what goes on behind scenes to create such a massive and successful event. They will take on the tasks and decisions related co-ordination, logistics, hospitality, communications and spreading the word through social/written media among other responsibilities.
Shadowing a Professional
While the camp itself is to last only two days, the learning process doesn’t end here. In their Diwali vacations, students will ‘shadow a professional’ for a day to give them an insight into what goes into holding a job and being a professional. This exercise will help students see the underlying skills that are needed at the work place, no matter where that may be.
All in all, The Career Camp isn’t simply an event; it’s a way to ensure that no stone is unturned when making what is possibly one of the most important decision in one’s life. Because at the end of the day, a career is something that needs to fit just like a glove – and every student all deserves to know which one fits best for them.
